Representative Jan Angel
Representative Christine Rolfes This luncheon will provide our members with the opportunity to have "lunch with our legislators". Rep. Christine Rolfes (D) and Rep. Jan Angel (R) will each have 20 minutes to present to our group. We will then open it up for questions. Rep. Christine Rolfes will discuss the recent federal health care bill and how it is being implemented. She will also talk about how our state helped influence the federal initiative, and what Washington is doing to prepare for changes in federal law. Rep. Jan Angel will discuss economy in crisis – where we are today and where we need to be tomorrow focusing on job retention, creation and growth. Washington State Representative Jan Angel was born and raised in Colorado, lived in Alaska for nine years, and then moved to Washington in 1983. She has lived in South Kitsap for the past 27 years. Jan has more than 37 years of business experience, including 14 years as a commercial banker, 9 years as a business owner with multiple locations in Kitsap and Pierce counties, 7 years in real estate sales in Kitsap County and as Kitsap County Commissioner for 8 years prior to being elected as State Representative for the 26th District. As State Representative, Jan serves as Ranking Minority Member on Local Government and Housing Committee. She also serves on Higher Education and the Early Learning and Children’s Services . In 2009 she graduated from the Council of State Government’s Legislative Academy. She recently has been named the Washington State Co-Chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). She was appointed, in 2009, to ALEC’s National Judicial Task Force. Christine represents the 23rd Legislative District, including the Kitsap County communities of Hansville, Kingston, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, Keyport, Silverdale, and most of East Bremerton. Since her election to the House of Representatives in 2006, Christine has advanced legislation reflecting the common-sense, progressive values of the 23rd District. Her leadership on ferry reform, military-family issues, sustainability and education has yielded tangible results for Washington families. In the House, Christine serves on five committees. She is vice-chair of the Ecology & Parks Committee, and also is a member of the Transportation, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Education Appropriations, and Environmental Health Committees. Before her election to the House, Christine served two terms on the Bainbridge Island City Council. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Virginia and a Master's in Public Administration from the University of Washington, Christine worked for the Kitsap County Department of Community Development as an open space program coordinator and watershed planner. She later moved to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where she counseled Northwest businesses and organizations on humanitarian assistance and commercial opportunities overseas. Workforce Readiness: What Is It? What Can We Do About It? Workforce Readiness – it’s a key focus area for SHRM, but one that’s so complex that it’s hard to get your arms around it, much less decide what you can do about it. The high school dropout rate in the state of Washington is high, and even those students who graduate from two- or four-year schools lack the skills they need to get and keep a good job. In this presentation Claudia will provide an overview of what workforce readiness means, the size of the problem, and how it will continue to impact us as HR professionals (assuming you’re not already struggling with the problem). Then she’llshare what other groups are already doing to address this problem along with ideas and suggestions for how we as individuals alone, or within our companies, chapters, and community groups, can get involved. Included will be a list of resources, including background white papers, contact information for already-existing initiatives, and sources of funding for workforce readiness programs. Then Carol will introduce us to two Washington State programs that can help our organizations finance skills training for current and future employees. Carol Melby is the Program Administrator for Economic Development in Workforce Education at the State Board for Community & Technical Colleges (SBCTC) in Olympia. She oversees the Worker Retraining Program for dislocated workers as well as two funds sources targeted at enhancing economic development through employee training: the Jobs Skills Program and the Customized Training Program. Carol earned an MBA from the University of Washington with an emphasis in human resource management, and a Training Specialist Certificate from the UW’s Extension University. Carol brings over twenty years of experience in designing, delivering, and managing employee training and development to her current role with the State Board. Claudia Malone, SPHR, is Principal of Malone & Associates, an HR training and consulting firm. She has over 20 years experience in human resources, with diverse firms such as Davol, PACCAR and Triad Associates. She is Past President of the Lake Washington HR Association (twice), and is currently the Workforce Development Director for the Washington State SHRM Council. Claudia has a BA in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island, and designs and delivers HR and supervisory skills courses through several local community colleges.
